How did sedimenti get its name and what does it mean?

Sedimenti is the italian word for sediments.

The name "Sedimenti" was originally conceived by founding partners, Nell Warren and I, Greg Misarti, who at the time were faux finishing luxury trains.   One of the finishes we developed and were very busily painting was a faux marble effect for bathrooms and ceilings.  That year we were visiting marble distributors to take in the beauty and grace of real slabs. We would borrow samples of stone tiles from distributors just to take them home, to study and gawk at them.   We were fascinated with the wonder that such incredible works of art and nature were caused by something as simple as debris settling into the earth.   While the faux marble activity at the time made our name a little easier to explain it has always held a deeper meaning for us.

If sediment and debris can be compacted into something as beautiful, precious and sought after as marble then why is the simile for "sediment" in the Oxford dictionary "dregs"?   The first definition for "dregs" in that same dictionary is "1 sediment; grounds"   The second definition is "2 worthless part".   To me this is a perfect example of one of the oversights of our culture.   So many of us treat the debris that settles and the excess which falls through the cracks and wastes away as worthless. We hide the scraps away in garbage cans and then send the "trash" off to landfills.   Naming a company which deals in aesthetics, beauty and art "Sediments" ("the grounds and dregs of life") was with the hope to remind us all that beauty would not exist without these dregs. Our name hopes to encourage the embracement of the left-overs, to use the ever-useful materials, not dispose of them or dismiss them.

At least with our business and our personal activities we can do our best to set an example of sustainable practices which have significantly less impact on our fragile surroundings. When you employ the services of the Sedimenti partnership we'll be doing everything we can to leave you with a clear conscience about the environmental impact your paint or other project leaves behind. We recognize what a potential hazard many artistic activities and paint projects can be. That's why we're glad to reduce those hazards and give you our promise that we will reuse, select, and conserve as much as is possible without compromising the project.
